A hypothetical question to help Monday go by.
If you could take your CURRENT VEHICLE, and pair it with the drivetrain/driveline of your choice, what would you end up with?
Let’s make one rule. It has to be within the realm of possibility without completely reconstructing the vehicle. Ie no original Mini’s with RWD and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! swaps. If it was FWD or RWD, it stays FWD or RWD. If it was available in AWD/4WD, you can choose to keep it that way or make it FWD/RWD, as the vehicle is already constructed in a way that will accept either one. Everything else is open. Interbrand swaps, auto/manual/CVT, electric/hybrid (to any chosen wheels as it’s just wiring), production/concept is all fair game.
I’ll start. 2010 Chevy Colorado:
Add this:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
And one of these:

Your turn.

Where there’s a will there’s a way.... if you can shoehorn the Audi 1.8T in there I’m sure you can find a way to fit in the 2.0L V-6.

Maserati never makes cars or engines, just noises.

I hate to do this, because it removes one of the best parts of a fantastic car (that amazingly good Mazda 5-speed manual gearbox), but I’d drive the damn thing more often if I did this.
My 2000 Miata
Add front motor out of AWD low-end Tesla Model S to the rear
Add about 25 kWh of battery in the middle
188 hp, probably around 2600 lbs, and a complete hooligan machine. That gets insanely good MPGe. Really, I could do with a lot less power than that, too - like 120 would be plenty.

I’ve a 2011 Ranger Sport. I’d like to yank the gas-sucking 4.0 SOHC and drop in a turbodiesel. Maybe a 2.2 Duratorq from Ford of Europe. I’d really like the 3.2, but I don’t think the PN150 Ranger can fit an I5.

Mercedes W124 300D - swap to Audi V10 TDI. Not any heavier or longer, really, but would require making room on both sides I think. Stays diesel, allows for hilarity, and if the engine eats itself it can be pulled pretty easily.
Land Rover 2.25 gas with 7:1 compression - WHY MESS WITH PERFECTION
Ranchero - already in progress. Swap from 144ci six to 262ci V8 and Jag IRS because of reasons.
Giant Lincoln barge... um, go to better trans, bored out to 500ish 462 MEL and 3x2 carbs? Nothing drastic, really.

I’ve seen an OM617 in a Ranger before, and it looked like it was made to fit there. That’s a 3.0 I5.
And, I mean, that 3.2 I5 goes in the nose of a Transit, which isn’t that long!

Add a six-speed sequential rally gearbox, probably a Drenth unit like the GT86 CS-R3 has, and keep the current engine but with a few added power bits (proper header/tune/exhaust).
Then gut it, add a cage, necessary safety bits, and some beefed up rally suspension, which I’d probably get done in-house for that employee discount. (Sébastien Ogier seems to like our rally stuff, and he probably knows a thing or two about it)
And then go do lots of this:

I’d consider it if I needed to replace the engine in my Miata, mind you... But not with only 24k on it (yes, 24k...)

Cruze would get the 2.0 Ecotec Turbo out of a Malibu and Getrag F40 6 speed transmission out of a Pontiac G6 GTP.
Wife’s Lexus RX330 would get a couple gallons of gasoline and a match.
Also, hypothetical but potentially happing soonish - NA Miata with a GM 3900V6 mated to a T5 “hybrid” tranmission (S10 bellhousing and tail housing, F-body center section, Mustang Pro 5.0 shifter). With headers and a tune it should make 280HP and 300 ft-lbs, and the simple, aluminum pushrod motor means it weighs about the same as a stock Miata engine.

My ‘97 Riviera would get an LS4 mated to a Getrag 6 speed. FWD.
My ‘91 Miata would get a supercharged 3800 Series II mated to a 6 speed GM transmission of some description
My ‘93 Sentra SE-R would get an LS4 mated to a Getrag 6 speed, because it would piss people off.

Can I add in-hub electric motors to the rear wheels of my FWD Twingo? It breaks the rules, but the conversion isn’t that much of an structural job. I mean a manual e-AWD plug-in hybrid Twingo would be cool.

I agree, I’d love to see a Cruze SS come out. Though I always had high hopes for that Code 130R concept they were flaunting around for a couple years. Basically a 2 door, RWD Cruze. With a 2.0 Turbo it would have been a modern Nova SS and I would have sold everything to get one.
The 3900 is a really underrated engine. With all the electronic wizardry it makes the same power as the previous 3800 SC engines, weighs much less, and it has an amazing torque curve and gets great gas mileage. GM’s 60 degree V6's in general don’t seem to get a lot of love. Aside from a crankshaft problem in some of the very really early ones, and the later intake gasket issues that plauged almost everything GM made, those engines were stout. We had an 86 S-10 with a 2.8L V6, and that truck was hit and totaled 3 times, and my dad just kept rebuilding it with junkyard parts, and we finally sold it with 280k miles and not once did anything in that powertrain break.

‘04 Scion xB.
Buy a brand-new replacement engine and have it balanced and blueprinted, have the head ported and polished, and a custom-made stainless exhaust manifold & system. Have the trans rebuilt with either a higher fifth gear, or find a 6-speed out of another Toyota product that will bolt up and give me a higher final gear.
Same zippiness & fuel economy with a smoother engine, a few more horses and lower highway RPMS for more comfortable long hauls.
‘64 C10.
Atlas inline 6 mated to a 5-speed manual and a narrowed late-model 1/2 ton rearend with disc brakes.
Reliability and easy of maintenance of a modern fuel-injected vehicle while being able to still tell people it has ”an inline 6 & manual transmission”.

![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:08 |

1) Yes
2) My brother had the Malibu Maxx SS... that engine (well, engines, he went through 2... but they were his fault, he didn’t oil the K&N filter properly and ended up screwing up sensors and burning valves) was a BLAST. Boatloads of torque and a great noise.
![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:08 |
|
Exactly. I still find it hilarious that my transmission has the “ torque capacity of 796 lb-ft ” but only has to do deal with 230. And the SLR engine will bolt right up. After 170k easy miles it probably needs a good work out by now.
![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:09 |

I’ve been looking into it a bit, and I can’t really afford it at the moment. However, at the when I finish university, and retire the Twingo as a daily driver, I will probably do something fun like this with it, since electric car parts should be way cheaper in 2-3 years.
![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:10 |

OK, enlighten me... what exactly does “blueprinting” an engine mean?
And a definite YES. We need more Atlas.

Remove 4.3 and 5 speed, add built, rev happy 4.8L V8 and 6-speed and a Posi-Trac rear end.
Alternatively, and more insanely, shoehorn an S52B32 and 5-speed out of an E36 M3 because crazy and different. Though it would take serious engine compartment and chassis mods to make a DOHC I6 fit.

I find it odd that the 4.8 was put in the full size trucks but for mine they jumped straight for the 5.3L. The 4.8 really doesn’t have enough low-end for the Silverado’s, but it’s an absolute SCREAMER when it gets up in the revs a bit.
4.8 in an S-10=good times. And a 4:11 rear for good measure.
If you were going the I6 route, personally I’d go with the Atlas 4.2, but in either case it’s going to be tough to fit an I6 into an S-10...

GM is offering a crate 2.0T now... Did someone say ‘93 Sonoma with 270hp?
Yes yes the Syclone had 280, but it was AWD and auto. Besides this thing can take a little more boost, and it’s probably lighter than the 4.3T in the Syclone.

For my 2001 Prelude, I’d take out my H23 VTEC and put in a heavily built/supercharged K20A from a 7th gen Accord Euro-R (a hotter version of what we know as the 1st gen TSX), along with its close-ratio LSD 6-speed.
For my 1991 Prelude, I’d put the H23 that I took out of the other car in it, build it a bit, and modify the transmission to have an LSD and faster final drive.
![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:28 |

Blueprinting is making all of the same measurement the exact same spec in an engine. Where the factory specs for a main bearing clearance might say .0015" -.0030" is in spec, a blueprinted engine would have all main bearing clearances a .0027". It makes the engine that tiny bit smoother, faster reving and more durable.
In the real world it isn’t really necessary except for super high horsepower or racing motors, but in the fantasy world where I have unlimited money to throw at the motor of my 12 year old daily driver I would totally have it done.
![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:30 |

So basically going from a range to a set target?
I guess they can’t really do that in mass prduction, right.
![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:31 |
|
Well, the plan is, my friend and I are looking to do the NA Miata / 3900 V6 swap and turn it into a cool off-road/rally type vehicle. I was drawn to the 3900 because its awesome powerband (90% of torque by 1500rpm) and the fact that it’s really not much bigger than the stock Miata4 banger.
![]() 08/08/2016 at 15:35 |
|
Basically. It removes “close enough” from the build, and as such adds a *lot* more machining and measuring time(with associate cost), as well as often requiring extra parts to find one that either are or can be made to be exactly “in spec”.
If you are aiming to put ever measurement exactly in the center of the tolerance range, half the “correct to tolerance” parts would be too big and not be usable, the other half would need to be machined to spec. In the case of something that can’t be modified/machined you might have to go through many of them to get enough that are perfectly to your spec.

2005 Legacy GT
With a Ford 302 based aluminum block engine with around 400hp
T5 5-speed with MGW shifter
converted to RWD
That’s it.
It’s a swap I’d consider if I keep the car long enough. V8 for the instant power and torque, T5 with MGW shifter for the absolute best shifter I’ve ever experienced, and RWD because AWD isn’t very dramatic.
Oh, and all the subaru nuts would be crazy mad at me for swapping out for a V8 when 400hp is easily attainable with the current engine.
